TOWLER: McCain picks Alaska's young governor - and philosophy over experience

John McCain has named 44-year-old Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his vice-presidential running mate.

Palin, a conservative who opposes abortion rights and favors drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, has been governor for less than two years. Previously, she was mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, an Anchorage suburb.

Her selection seems to have thrilled conservatives, who had worried that McCain might name Joe Lieberman or Tom Ridge, both of whom support abortion rights. But Palin's youth and inexperience has some supporters and advisers troubled, the New York Times is reporting, because it conflicts with McCain's charge that Barack Obama is too young and inexperienced to be president.

It's McCain, not Palin, who is running for president, of course, but some voters may be concerned about McCain's age and prior health problems. If voters weigh which vice presidential candidate is likely to be able to step into the presidency on a moment's notice, Palin will look pretty weak against Joe Biden.
